Spiral router bits are a huge help for improving or tuning performance on a CNC router. Depending on which way the spiral goes [up or down], you get a cutter that either moves the waste in the direction of the spiral. The direction of the waste also exerts a force on the workpiece in the same directions.  So, an up-cut router bit will move the chips up and clear the cut well, but it will tend to pull up on the workpiece [so the clamping needs to be better and it has the disadvantage that it wants to pull up and has a tendency to cause break out along the top edge.]

Why should I choose a down-cut router bit for my CNC?
For wood and materials that may chip, a down cut is cutting into the material, not lifting it; as the downcut pushes down, it gives a cleaner finished edge on top, but can break out the bottom edge. If you are working with spoil boards and backing jigs it's not problem. The down-cut also increases work pressure helping to keep the workpiece firmly on the table. The disadvantage to them is that they force the chips down to the bottom of the slot or pocket, which is far from ideal. Think about using a downcut for a final finish pass where there is less waste to clear and you want the best finish.

  1. CMT 190 Mortising Spiral Bit D-9.52 l-22.2 S-9.52
CMT part no:190.513.11 CMT 190 Up-Down Spiral bit for Mortising D-9.52 l-22.2 S-9.52 2+2 CMT's 190 series solid carbide up & downcut spiral bits are engineered for top-notch mortising in woodworking projects. These bits utilize a super-micrograin carbide formulation, ensuring sharp cutting edges, while the low-angle spiral design cleanly shears wood and efficiently ejects chips. Notably, they operate at lower temperatures, promoting extended edge durability. With enhanced feed rates and cutting quality, these tools excel in mortising applications, delivering a perfect finish on both the upper and lower workpiece surfaces. Perfect for use in solid wood, wood composites, plastics, and laminates, these bits are compatible with various machines, including CNC routers, hand-held routers, and more. TECHNICAL DETAILS: - Premium quality solid tungsten carbide - 2+2 spiral cutting edges (Z2+2) - Provides an excellent finish on both the upper and lower sides of the workpiece as the compression spiral is designed to shear cut into the work piece APPLICATION: used for cutting, copying, panel sizing and any routing applications in solid wood, wood composites, plastic materials and laminates. Use a high feed speed on well-clamped workpieces. Can be used on machining centres, point to point machines, CNC routers and hand-held routers equipped with chucks or adaptors
